Fencing....

Well, boring as it is, it is what I've been up to lately. Here's my latest fencing style. I disassemble my existing four rail, which is in tatters. Replace any posts that need it, then hang 36" welded wire on the posts and replace the top and bottom rails, and the batten. It's great for me, lambs can't get through, the top rail keeps the cows from pushing down the wire. My rails are mostly shot so this way I only need half of the existing ones to be useable, and I can usually pull that off. The wire itself is only $0.50/ft., so if I can get away without buying other materials, it's fairly affordable.

Today's section, and my helpers....

Dis-assembly. This is actually the most work. There are SO MANY nails in those old boards and if I don't carefully pull each one, the boards get torn apart and I can't use them.

Sometimes there's just not much board left. I use 'em anyway...

Coming together...

Done!

Waste not, want not ;) It seems that no expense was spent on that fence Matt. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, being able to get new life from what was a worn out fence is great Matt. The new fence looks good, and it is very functional, and it used what you had handy, sounds like a win, win to me. :D

Looks great, Matt. I do really love the old 4-board fences. I love the pix from when yours was new. They are so nice-looking to me. I imagine in your climate they just rot though. My favorite fencing is a combination of what you just did. I like the woven wire in between the posts and the cross-boards, because I like small critters, and they go right through a traditional board fence. But I like them with a few cross-boards. I think you're going to find something that maybe you hadn't thought of, and that is that the sheep LOVE to scratch themselves on taught woven wire. Which means that your nice fencing will soon be bowed in between all your posts, and covered in wool dreads, since you didn't do any cross-boards. Which isn't a huge deal if you don't mind how it looks. :) Looks like 2x4 no-climb horse fencing?

That fence looks awesome Matt! I'm surround by barbed wire here and that always seems to want repairing somewhere. I came home form work today and planted 14 raspberry canes a buddy at work had given me. My plan is to build a living fence and hide all that wire. But I think if I had some wooden fencing like that I might be inclined to show it off.

Dang, that looks like a lot of digging, Matt! No wonder you've been so beat. It looks great though!

Stupid question from a newbie: Why did you go that route and not just metal t posts with electric wire? $0.50 a foot seems really expensive in my world!

.. apparently fences don't work too well on horses either .. the neighbor up the road has four horses surrounded by an electric fence .. problem is, they don't turn it on .. so, every morning the Mrs has to drive an obstacle course made up of horses .. :o

.. the other day an animal control officer stopped by because other folks up the road have been complaining of horses in their yard .. I said, I got no complaint, they were welcome to come and eat my grass and leave their poo anytime, I just pick it up and store it in buckets ... he looked at me rather strangely for some reason .. :D
