I agree Lolly, when Georges kids are older they will look back on these day with fond memories, or at lest they will have Great stories to tell their Grandkids about how hard things were when they were Kids. Either way they win.

So now, in a relatively protected spot of our compost pile, a Dorking hen is settin a clutch of eggs. I found it today. When I told the kids about the new development, they replied with a unified voice, "Oh yes, she's been sitting on her eggs for about two days now!"

So, if she goes unnoticed by a predator, we should have new chicks arriving on or about Nov 15th. Coincidentally, that is the same due date for Linda's litter of pigs.
I just did the math and if all goes well, the time it takes a newborn chick to produce a newborn chick is ~ 6 1/2 months.
