SF, there is a thin plastic sheet available at the home stores that some folks use to create a smooth surface under flooring. A friend gave me the bits they had left over, thinking that I might be able to repurpose them somehow. It is flexible and seems to be only about 1/32 of an inch or so thick. It comes in large sheets, can be glued down and shouldn't present a problem when you are ready to screw your guides into place.
